Spraypaint Portrait

Miss Tatyana’s birthday is coming up & she loves pictures. She loves them so much that she usually sleeps with them under her pillow, causing them to wrinkle and eventually ruin. She asked me if I could give her a nice picture of her & I, so this is one of her gifts:

Since it’s on canvas, hopefully she’ll hang it on the wall. And if it winds up under the pillow, I know it’ll be safe 🙂

She also asked for a sleep mask, a drawstring backpack with her name on it, & a necklace similar to mine. I’ll post all that when it’s done!

Fancy Card Case

I am still deeply in love with the Afternoon Delight fabric, and I couldn’t stand the very little last bit of it sitting in my scrapbin, unused & unloved.
I’ve had this cigarette case for about 2 years now. I begged my best friend to give it to me & I never used it. I don’t smoke & I didn’t know what to do with it. The cigarette case had two decorative metal panels on either side, so I removed them & the two pieces of metal inside that were meant to hold in the cigarettes. Now I have a snazzy new card case for my ID, library card, etc.

My sewing stash

There is a sewing world of wonder over at Sew, Mama, Sew!. If you haven’t checked them out yet, please do it right now!
They are on the tail end of fat quarter month, which was amazing, giving a new FQ idea(& tutorials!) each day. SMS has become a daily routine for me, right up there with checking my email & sewing.

A little off subject, that will get right back on subject:
Saturday night driving home from our friend’s house, I saw a pretty set of buckets on shelves 2 houses down from ours. So we parked our car & I made Joe carry them home with me. They are in excellent condition & a little soap and water made them perfect. Joe asked where I was planning on putting them, since our apartment is so tiny. I said “I’ll figure it out” and we went to bed. They fit perfectly in my sewing area (after I removed the ugly gray tote my fabric was once in), and now I am very pleased with my “new”, superly organized sewing area.

That brings me back to SMS…
On February 4th the had a post called “Tell us about your stash!”. I wanted to, but was embarrased of the completely unorganized dump my sewing area had become. But now it is awesome &  now I’m going to answer the SMS questions! Yay! (sorry that was a long intro ;))

What do you usually sew?
I usually sew bags, I repair a lot of things for friends, & I’ve been known to sew some stuffies.
When you shop for fabric, what size cuts do you usually buy? (i.e. If you see something beautiful, but you don’t have a use for it right away, how much do you buy?)
Since my budget is pretty tight, I only purchase what I need.

Do you buy on impulse or do you go out looking for something you need?
Again, it’s usually just when I need it. Since I am very big on upcycling old clothes, I rarely ever “need” new fabric.

Are you a pre-washer? If you are, do you wash your fabric before you need it, or only when you’re ready to use it?
I prewash when I need it.

Do you iron it?
My iron is my best friend when sewing.

How do you sort it? (color, print size, collection, etc.)
I have no certain way of sorting. Small cuts (like FQ & half yards) are all in the colorful bins, larger cuts & clothing are on the shelves, & scraps are in the black bins sorted by small scraps, medium scraps, & large scraps.

Do you have any special folding techniques?
Everything in the bins is folded in quarters, then in thirds, then tucked into the ends.

How do you store your fabric?
Bins & shelves.

What tips do you have for building up a well-rounded stash?
Um, I don’t think I have a well rounded stash at all. So, I’m tipless.

When do you say enough is enough?
Never! (or, when your boyfriend says “Honey, you need to make something before you accept anymore clothes from your friends”)

What are some of your favorite stash-busting projects?
I love making little makeup bags. And yoyos!

Do you have a current favorite print in your stash? Let’s see it!
My current favorite print is the Alexander Henry print I just used. Afternoon Delight. Unfortunately I only have a few big scraps left of it 😦

What’s your definition of the perfect stash? (Consider sharing a picture or two of your stash & storage, or direct us to a pic on Flickr!)
One that is neat, fabric is easily accesible & visible, and has lots of pretty fabrics! Like this one.

Finished my necklace!

So a few posts ago was “DIYing my presents”. This is the finished result, and I am quite happy. A b&w photo of my darling boyfriend is inside.

The heart that the locket hangs from is the sweetest part of the whole necklace. One day I came home and found it on my sewing machine. I had never seen it before, so I asked Joe about it. He found it on the ground at work & brought it home for me. Aww, that just melts my heart.

Afternoon Delight Bag

I just finished this awesome pleated pocketbook.

The lining is Marble Swirls in Orange by Moda. I tried to make a hidden zippered pocket, & that didn’t work out too well, so I made a zippered pouch and attached it to the lining fabric:

I think I might change the pink bias tape for a dark red. This was so fun to make!

Tatyana’s New Friend

I finished her! I finished her!
yoyo-004
I am so proud of myself. I finished her on Saturday morning! Friday night Joe took a nap and played xbox, so all I did all night was make yoyos!

I put her together with fishing line. Her face and little stuffed feet are made with the same fabric as the cream colored yoyos, which is an old shirt of mine. The green fabric is a tablecloth I thrifted, the print fabric is my very much loved & thrifted drapes, & the pink is another shirt. I was going to make stuffed hands, too, but I got bored with hand sewing & used heart shank buttons instead.
Overall I am super happy!!

Today I am working on a pleated pocketbook using this delightful Alexander Henry fabric called “Afternoon Delight”.

Weekend Project

Joe’s mom, Nancy, showed me this darling little yoyo clown she had recieved as a child. Unfortunately her clown had a run in with the dryer, and the dryer had won. I so badly want to fix it for her, but Nancy’s was put together with wire, and I’m not sure how to go about fixing it.
I started looking up yoyo clowns online, to see if there is a method of putting them together that would help me fix the broken clown. Most free patterns online are put together with very strong string or yarn, not wire. 😦

Since Christmas I have found yoyo clowns, yoyo dolls, yoyo elephants, yoyo rabbits, yoyo everything!

I’ve finally decided to give one a go. I am making a non-wired yoyo girl for Miss Tatyana. I am weary about the hands and feet, but I have seen everything from jingle bells to pom poms to little stuffed hands and feet used. I will be making the head from a pattern for mini dolls found here.

I am very bad at starting projects and not finishing them, if they take more than a day to complete, but I have given myself goals with this project & I will finish it! I promised myself I would make 10 yoyos a day, and with 65 yoyos, I figured I’d be done in 7 days. But I already have 20 yoyos completed, and am aiming for tuesday instead of the original next friday deadline.
